SERVICE

The Heartbeat of Recovery

We keep what we have by giving it away.

Service is the spiritual antidote to self-centeredness. In AA, service isn’t optional decoration — it is part of how we stay sober. Whether it’s chairing a meeting, welcoming newcomers, or quietly setting up Zoom, every act of service strengthens the group and our own recovery.

Alcoholics Anonymous, “Working With Others”:

“Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics.”

Taking Root Through Service

You do not need to be perfect to serve. You only need willingness.

Service helps us:

  • Build accountability
  • Deepen humility
  • Strengthens unity
  • Turns recovery into action
  • Connects to a sisterhood

If you are sober and willing, there is a place for you.

“For A.A., service is anything whatever that helps us to reach a fellow sufferer.”

As Bill Sees It:

“Service gladly rendered, obligations squarely met, troubles well accepted or solved with God’s help, the knowledge that at home or in the world outside we are partners in a common effort, the well~understood fact that in God’s sight all human beings are important, the proof that love freely given surely brings a full return, the certainty that we are no longer isolated and alone in self~constructed prisons, the surety that we need no longer be square pegs in round holes but can fit and belong in God’s scheme of things…these are the permanent and legitimate satisfactions of right living for which no amount of pomp and circumstance, no heap of material possessions, could possibly be substitutes.”

The Service Structure of AA

How AA Service Works

AA is built on an upside-down triangle.

At the top are the groups — and the members.

Below them are trusted servants who help carry out the group’s decisions.

Authority comes from group conscience.
Leadership is service, not control.

Each level exists for one purpose:
To support the groups.

We bloom from the roots of the women who stayed.
